So, now coconut oil is going to kill us?...

Yet another reason science, sensationalism & journalism don’t mix...

Just a few things:

1. COCONUT OIL ISNT ABOUT TO KILL YOU TEAM. IT’S ALL GOOD.

2. Principle 1 in toxicology = the dose makes the poison. Anything and everything is bad for you IF you consume too much.

3. Will coconut oil make you fat & unwell if you ladle it onto everything? Yes. So will any other high saturated fat food. In 2015 the Cochrane review (they review stuff, it’s well respected in science/healthcare communities) summarised that cutting back on saturated fats lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17%, but didn't change the risk of dying.

4. Is coconut oil a ‘miracle food’? No. Personally I don’t believe they exist. It’s high in Lauric acid though, which comes with a range of ‘potential’ health benefits (like most things, we don’t understand it fully).

5. Should you chuck out your coconut oil & use something different? Nah. Just use it in moderation - treat it like any other oil & stop telling yourself ‘it’s ok because it’s coconut’. Olive, canola & rapeseed oils are generally well regarded by nutritionists...but I use loads more in my food, depending on what I’m cooking.
