About Me

Scientist, Educator, Communicator

PUZC9449.jpeg

I am a skilled Research Scientist with training in physiology and toxicology, my main areas of interest relate to understanding and reducing risks to human health through sound research and scientific communication & quality education.

I was a Doctoral researcher at Edinburgh Napier University, focussing on developing the knowledge base on the toxicity and risk of nanotechnologies to male reproductive health. Alongside contributing to development of this little understood area, the role significantly enhanced my practical skillset as a bench researcher, including competency in developing and improving scientific protocols, working with cell lines, nanomaterials, and performing cell and molecular biology research. It also allowed me to develop further my critical thinking, written and oral communication skills, project management, teamwork, leadership and teaching skills through supervision of undergraduate & postgraduate level researchers.

Over the previous 10 years I worked as a Research Scientist and Toxicologist at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM). During this time, I developed and refined a wide range of scientific, organisational, leadership and management skills through involvement in a range of health and risk management related projects, as well as achieving (in post) an MSc in Applied Toxicology with Distinction.

Prior to joining the Institute of Occupational Medicine, I was a Physiology Honours student at the University of Edinburgh. I received a nomination for the Ellis Prize 2005 for my final year project, which examined pathophysiology of the stress related cycle of violence in rats and was conducted whilst on ERASMUS exchange at the University of Leiden, Holland.

Outwith my work in academia, I hold contract roles as a Research Associate for the multi-national personal training provider Ultimate Performance (U.P.), and as a trainer and content contributor for Les Mills International, both of which serve to broaden my general scientific knowledge, management and teaching skills. For both organisations, I provide written communications focussed on bridging the gap between cutting edge science & the lay person (in the areas of general physiology, sports science, nutrition, ergogenic aids and fitness programming). Within my role as a National Trainer for Les Mills, I design & deliver training and upskilling to fitness professionals from entry level to experienced Les Mills presenters within the UK and worldwide. In association with this job, I am a sponsored Brand Athlete for Reebok. I maintain contact with Les Mills International on the development of their Research efforts in the field of sport and exercise science.
